The RWD-8 was the most popular training and liaison aircraft of the 1920s and 1930s in Poland, as well as the most numerous domestically designed type produced there. Its preliminary design was created by Eng. Stanisław Wigura and Eng. J. Drzewiecki as part of the LOPP competition in 1931. Production took place at Doświadczalne Warsztaty Lotnicze and at Podlaska Wytwórnia Samolotów (PWS) in the military RWD-8 PWS version.
