The game is played over 4 rounds (weeks), during which you gradually move from the shallows down to the darkest depths. A limited number of turns forces you to plan ahead and chain effects together as efficiently as possible.
On each turn you make a simple but crucial choice: play a fish into your ocean, or dive into a sector and gain research benefits—expanding your catalogue, working with eggs and fry, and creating schools.
Illustrated sea-creature cards are complemented by clear iconography and information that help you quickly understand effects and easily build powerful combinations.
In the role of a researcher, you gradually dive into deeper layers of seas and oceans—from a colorful shallow reef, through the twilight zone, and into complete darkness. The fish you discover during the game provide benefits in later dives as well, so every choice influences your further progress and scoring.
Each turn you choose between two actions: either play a fish card into your ocean (and pay its cost), or dive into a selected sector to gain various bonuses and advance your research. At first you focus on cheaper fish and laying eggs; later comes hatching, and toward the end of the game the strongest abilities and forming schools take center stage.
