ORP Wicher was the lead ship of the destroyer class of the same name, whose design was based on French Bourrasque-type plans. Although it was not among the most modern vessels when commissioned, it represented a significant step forward for the Polish Navy. The ship also had its weaknesses—it was relatively slower, suffered from certain stability issues, and had a more limited range, which was gradually improved during service.
The vessel was built in France at the Chantiers Naval Francais shipyard in Blainville-sur-Orne. In the interwar period it carried out a number of ceremonial visits (especially in the Baltic Sea region), and in 1931 Marshal Józef Piłsudski returned to Poland from Madeira aboard her. The destroyer took part in the opening phase of the campaign in September 1939 and in coastal defense; however, on 3 September 1939 it was sunk during an air raid.
