Its top speed exceeded Mach 3 (over 3,700 km/h), and with an operational ceiling up to 26 km it was difficult to shoot down by anti-missile defense systems. The SR-71 featured an advanced titanium airframe that allowed it to withstand the extreme temperatures generated during supersonic flight. It was used primarily for intelligence gathering, and its ability to evade enemy missiles was a legendary advantage.
